Some countries are worse than others when it comes to holiday car rental accidents, according to new statistics.
Research by holiday car rental broker CarDelMar reveals that Chile is the worst place in the world to hire a car – with the highest percentage of returned damaged cars (7.7 per cent).
This is more than 25 times the number of bumped and bashed holiday car hire vehicles returned in the US (0.3 per cent).
Ireland ranks as the second worst country with 5.8 per cent of cars returned in a damaged condition, followed by Costa Rica and Mexico.
People driving in Spain are more careful, with 99.5 per cent of cars returned in immaculate condition, and Switzerland and Austria also see safe driving.
Carsten Greiner, managing director of CarDelMar, commented: “Drivers are always very quick to blame the driving conditions of another country or the habits of another nationality – and perhaps our survey proves that some countries are worse to drive in than others.
“It is interesting that such a diverse mix of countries – Chile, Ireland, Costa Rica, Mexico and Belgium – have topped the polls with a much greater percentage of returned vehicles with damages.”
